Sustainability Initiatives at Louisville Zoo
Sustainability is a core theme driving the Louisville Zoo's mission "to better the bond between people and our planet." By educating visitors about wildlife conservation through amazing encounters with animal ambassadors and nature, the Louisville Zoo works to demonstrate how our actions at home impact delicate ecosystems across the planet.
Current Initiatives
Recycling Initiative
The Louisville Zoo partners with WestRock and Public Works for an innovative recycling program that sorts all trash and streamlines the process efficiently, diverting thousands of pounds of waste from landfills annually.
Party for the Planet
The Zoo hosts a month-long Earth celebration annually, powered by Louisville Gas and Electric Company and Kentucky Utilities Company, featuring events and eco-partner activities designed to inspire environmental action.
Eco-Cell
The Zoo partners with Eco-Cell to recycle electronics, preventing mining in critical gorilla habitats and recovering precious materials like coltan. Guests can drop off unwanted electronics at designated collection points.
Plant for the Planet
Since 2011, the Zoo has partnered with LG&E/KU Energy to increase on-property trees through grants and participates in the "Right Tree, Right Place" initiative to enhance the Zoo's green canopy.
Sustainability Achievements
HerpAquarium — Nation's First Bioclimatic Exhibit
The Louisville Zoo constructed the nation's first bioclimatic ectotherm exhibit featuring a green roof, grouping species by climate rather than geographic origin for enhanced energy efficiency and animal welfare.
Glacier Run — Award-Winning Design
Glacier Run is designed with water reclamation systems, natural convection cooling, and highly efficient HVAC and lighting systems. The exhibit has won multiple architectural and sustainability awards.
Solar Power
Thirty solar panels have been installed on the administration building (funded through Sharon Kremer's bequest) with plans for additional panels near the MetaZoo Discovery Center and train station.
The Zoo was recognized as a "Sustainability Champion" at the 2016 Metro Louisville Sustainability Summit, affirming its leadership role in local environmental stewardship.
